Why Diversity Makes Good Business Sense

One of the reasons why we love design thinking and experience-based design is because it encourages you to bring together teams of diverse stakeholders for maximum output. Below are three reasons why a VARIETY of stakeholders can help you solve business challenges in a more fulsome way.

1: Diversity of Thought and Perspective.

People from different life experiences, organization levels and demographics will give you unique insights that can spark innovative solutions. It’s like having a toolbox with a variety of tools. Each implement can help you tackle a different aspect of the problem more effectively.

 2: You Avoid Echo-Chambers.

Homogenous teams mean everyone is likely to think in the same way, limiting creativity and leading to group think. When everyone agrees too easily, you might miss out on critical feedback and alternative solutions. Diverse teams challenge each other’s thinking, which leads to better decision-making and more robust solutions.

3: Empathy Builds Better Solutions.

Empathy is key to understanding pain points of your target. When you address these pain points with a diverse group, you build genuine empathy and that empathy leads to a better end result. In fact a Harvard Business Review study found that diverse teams solve problems faster and more effectively than cognitively homogenous teams.

So, next time you’re tackling a problem, remember to embrace diversity of thought, avoid the echo-chamber effect, and lead with empathy. Your work will be better for it!
